Because we are owner building, and doing it only on the weekends, I knew that things were going to take time, and I didn’t want my frame to get wet for any longer than necessary.
When we took delivery of the timber for the frame, I took some effort to cover it in tarps and plastic to keep it dry.
However, my efforts were not really good enough. As it turns out, water will get in any tiny little hole – surprise surprise!

The problem then becomes mould. Wet timber gets mouldy if it stays in a humid environment. It stays humid in the timber pack because the timber can’t dry out.
Here are some shots of mouldy timber:

So the lesson here is to cover you timber well – do not rely on tarps or plastic. Build a simple shelter with a corrugated iron roof. You could put tarps around the sides, but make sure the roof is corrugated iron.
